A bright and welcoming outdoor room for entertaining and relaxing
This courtyard garden belongs to a lovely holiday cottage in the golf and seaside resort of Elie, so the garden has to be very low maintenance but provide a warm welcome over a long season.
The design makes clever use of space to fit in different seating areas without any sense of crowding. Extra seating and storage is fitted into raised beds and the bold gazebo gives a great focal point to this very sociable garden. The style is contemporary with a seaside twist – bright blue and gold flowers echo colours of sea and sand, whilst grasses move in the breeze and the smooth sandstone paving is combined with beach pebbles.
Professional lighting design has been incorporated to pick out the soft grasses and gently light the gazebo so that the garden looks great at night. We chose warm lights which are flattering to people as well as plants! The east coast of Scotland is surprisingly sunny but even so the garden was designed to look good in all weathers and we think it is rather sleek and beautiful in the rain.
When we first saw Golf Cottage in late February it was in the middle of a major refurbishment and extension. The new garden had to be designed and built by mid May, whilst the garden remained an important access route for the contractors working in the house. All of which was a bit of a challenge, but the hard work paid off as we finished on time and the clients were really delighted with the transformation.
