A Borders Walled Garden

The brief was to recreate a new country garden which would be a legacy beyond the present owners – a gift from them to this lovely and historic house. The new design is made up of many garden rooms, each with its own name and character (The arched garden, The moon garden…). Views between each garden room open up new perspectives whilst the whole design fits together pleasingly when viewed from the roof terrace. The planting is rich, incorporating more contemporary grasses with deep herbaceous areas, shrubs, trees, roses and many bulbs. There is an emphasis on beautiful and jewel like colour combinations, changing with the seasons.

At the start of this project we had a large blank canvas. The old garden walls had already been repaired with beautiful handmade bricks and the garden cleared of more recent additions such as a tennis court. We had to be brave to relocate some nice mature trained fruit trees to a new orchard area outside the walled garden. Moved at the right time by the client’s own gardener they have continued to thrive, allowing a completely new design to take shape in the walled garden. A very good greenhouse and cold frames were already in place so we worked around them, and have also kept or relocated quite a lot of climbing roses and herbaceous plants from the old garden borders. It is good to have continuity as well as change. We also had help with the survey work from our client’s very friendly dogs – I think the puppy has brought Graham a sprig of apple blossom!
