It’s always good to have a challenge, and combining a young grandchild with an aspiration for a meticulous and thoughtful garden in the Japanese style, was therefore a rather nice design brief. The result seems to be working well for everyone. The vivid contemporary ‘tea house’ and Red Bench are a focal point around which everyone can gather. The winding path and meditation walks across stepping stones encourage prayerful contemplation, or games of ‘don’t touch the ground’, depending on who is playing. And a bespoke covered sand pit and gravel garden with rake and tiny rocks is training up a new 3 year old expert in the ancient art of Karesansui (dry landscape garden).

This Perth garden was a rather bleak and lifeless space; under the gravel and paving we found endless layers of landscaping fabric, brick and old carpet! We managed to find homes for paving and other excess materials locally through Freecycle. Now the garden is coming back to life, and in the Spring there will be cherry blossom…..
